A Place for Healing and Growth

The Center for Growth, P.C. is committed to providing quality, personalized therapy and psychological services to the Colorado Springs area. The Center for Growth is run by experienced licensed psychologists who have been active in contributing to the growth and deveopment of the field of psychology. Psychological interns and trainees, who are sueprvised by our psychologists, also provide therapy and assessment services.

Who Is Therapy For?

One of the most common myths of therapy is that it is only for those people who are mentally ill or those unable to help themselves. Rather, most people can benefit from therapy. In fact, most therapists themselves have gone through personal therapy and many prominent therapists recommend returning to therapy on a regular basis. Although therapy is a powerful way of helping people who are struggling to get by in life, it is also a valuable resource for people seeking deeper relationships, more authentic living, and greater life satisfaction. In other words, therapy is for anyone desiring growth or healing.

Does Therapy Help?

Yes! Although therapy does not help everyone, most people report they do benefit from therapy. For the best results it is important to select your therapist wisely and give consideration to your level of commitment. Therapy is not an easy process and you will benefit nearly as much if you are not ready to make a commitment to the process. Those who do make the commitment often find it richly rewarding!

Selecting a Therapist

Finding a therapist who you feel comfortable with is essential to maximizing the benefits of therapy. The right therapist fit depends on many factors, including the type of therapy they provide. Although there are many different approaches to therapy or counseling, generally they can be classified into two broad categories: Solution-Focused Therapy and Depth Psychotherapy. Practitioners of solution-focused therapies provide an approach focusing on alleviating symptoms, enhancement of skills, and quick solutions to problems. Depth psychotherapists also are committed to alleviating symptoms; however, they prefer an approach which also helps people to gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their values, and who they would like to become.

At the Center for Growth, we are committed to helping the individual and helpling them find the best therapist fit for their needs and desired outcome. In our initial consultation, we carefully evaluate the individual's needs and therapetuic fit. If one of our therapists is not the right fit, we provide you with informaiton on other options and provide referrals to other therapists in the community who may be a better fit.

Our Approach

Depth psychotherapy, or what James Bugental (1992) calls "life-changing therapy," entails a deep valuing of the human experience in all its complexity. Many depth psychotherapists maintain the understanding that most of the problems people face are the result of "existence pain" or problems in living (Yalom, 1990). The idea of existence pain suggests that we all will inevitably run into painful aspects of living at some point in our life. Today, our society is quick to label people as being mentally ill; however, this is often not necessary or beneficial.

Many approaches to therapy focus primarily on relieving symptoms. Although these therapies are very effective at alleviating symptoms, they often do not address the underlying issues which led to the symptoms developing in the first place. Oftentimes, the symptoms will return or a new set of symptoms will develop from the same unresolved issues. The approach to therapy which we take at the Center for Growth addresses both the symptoms and the underlying issues to facilitate a deeper level of healing and growth.

The particular style of depth psychotherapy provided at the Center for Growth can vary to some degree depending upon the therapist. However, there are several central beliefs and approaches shared by all of our therapists:

  • All people are valued as unique individuals!
  • People desire to be in relationships. Part of the process of therapy is to help people develop more satisfying and enriching relationships.
  • The relationship between the client and therapist is an essential part of the healing and growth process.
  • People have within themselves a potential for healing and growth. It is the therapists job to assist them in developing this potential.
  • Humans are complex creatures who are influenced by many things, some of which we are aware of and some of which we are often unaware. Therapy can be beneficial by helping people become more aware of themselves.
  • Humans are meaning and growth seeking people; however, growth takes time and is not always easy. The development of genuine, supportive relationships is an important part of the growth process and finding personal meaning.
